Doctor-Recommended Breastfeeding Techniques

Cradle Hold Breastfeeding

Doctors recommend breastfeeding your baby solely with breast milk for the first 6 months. Breast milk is a major factor in both the mental and physical development of your baby. Breast milk also facilitates digestion as much as it aids in a baby's development. Breast milk is the most easily digestible food. Experts state that the breastfeeding duration for a baby is between 10 to 15 minutes. Before breastfeeding your baby, the mother's hands and the area around the nipple must be clean. After sitting in a comfortable place, you can start the breastfeeding process. There are many breastfeeding techniques, but doctors recommend a few specific breastfeeding positions.

Side-Lying Breastfeeding Technique

This is the most comfortable position for both the baby and the mother. The mother sits and takes her baby into her lap, with the baby's head resting in the crook of the mother's arm, facing the breast for feeding. To make it more comfortable for both the baby and the mother, a pillow can be placed under the baby and on the mother's lap for support. Another breastfeeding technique recommended by doctors is upright breastfeeding, which can be used when your baby is fussy; you can breastfeed them while standing, holding them in your arms and gently rocking. The Underarm Hold Breastfeeding Technique can be a more comfortable breastfeeding method depending on the mother's delivery method. It is especially a way for mothers to breastfeed babies who wake up during the night. It is not used much during the day. Doctors generally recommend this technique for mothers who have had a Cesarean section. You can lie on your side in bed, with your back supported by someone or a pillow, and breastfeed your baby in a face-to-face position. If this position starts to cause discomfort for the mother, she can change sides from right to left and continue breastfeeding. The Laid-Back Breastfeeding Technique is a method we hear about often and falls under the category of doctor-recommended breastfeeding techniques. Doctors also recommend this technique primarily for mothers who have had a Cesarean section. The mother holds the baby under her arm, with the baby positioned slightly above her upper thigh, so the baby's face meets the mother's breast. This breastfeeding technique, like the cradle hold, can be made easier with the help of a pillow to support your baby. It is a position where you can lie on your back and comfortably move your baby on top of you. The mother's head and neck area can be supported with pillows in this position.
